B. READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS
Henry David Thoreau puzzled most of the people of his time. Many who knew him, or knew about him, considered him strange and different. They did not regard him as a useful member of society. They said that he acted on impulse rather than reason and that when he thought, he thought with his feelings. One critic gave him the degree “ Bachelor of Nature ” ( rather than the academic “ Bachelor of Arts” ) because of Thoreau’s devotion to woods and fields rather than to things of the city. This half humorous title “ Bachelor of Nature” was doubly suitable, for Thoreau never married. In his early twenties he had become engaged to a young lady who had descended from a long line of judges and clergymen, but her family considered him too unconventional – too “ different ”. The engagement was quickly broken off and Thoreau continued to live as a bachelor for the rest of his life.
More than most nineteenth-century authors, however, Thoreau’s writings have a contemporary appeal. His originality shows itself in the way he put his thoughts into words, and in the way he translated his words into actions.
47.

48.

49.
